What's Going On With My Training?

I've been meaning to write something about my fitness routine but other things have been keeping my focus away from fitness writing. But don't worry, I haven't been slacking in the gym – in fact, I'm pleasantly surprised that I've kept myself fit throughout the entire summer and even slimmed down come autumn. The surprising factor was that shedding weight wasn't my intention and if you've been keeping an eye on my Snapchat (@simply_selma), you know I've been enjoying a greasy cheesy burger, slice of pizza and croissants perhaps more than I should have. I'm not a fitness expert so I've only grazed the topic of reverse-dieting but it seems that was what happened to me.

My metabolism was so used to pretty streamlined diet consisting mostly of eggs, chicken, broccoli, rice, potatoes and salad that it eventually adapted, slowed down and was shocked by all the guilty pleasures I've indulged in, kick-starting it and making it work faster. Human body is such a complicated machine and I don't really think I'll ever fully grasp how such paradoxical things can even happen. But I'm not complaining since my tummy doesn't have as much rolls as it used to (nor is it as bloated) and my legs don't wobble as much. To me it's mind-blowing that, for once, I'm not as focused on losing weight but it happened nonetheless. 

I have neglected yoga quite a bit, though. Will think about how to get back to it again. I've also almost completely stopped with cardio and fully focused of lifting weights. I just feel like I need to switch things up a bit from time to time and I've been craving some cardio in my life – apart from warming up for lifting. As for weights, I've been regular in the gym these past six months and all the hard work I've put into my upper body is paying off nicely. I'm finally seeing my top half looks symmetrical to my bottom half. Arms have a nice shape and tone, my back has all these bulges I never knew existed and I feel much stronger – no one carries my grocery bags anymore! 

Seeing that things are going well, I've given myself a new goal which is to put on as much lean muscle mass as possible and I would like to gain strength in general. Easier said than done, eh? I'll be writing on how exactly I intend to do that, add more recipes to the database and maybe share a certain timeline of my progress – if I actually do manage to keep my things so put together.

  • Namjeravala sam već neko vrijeme da zapišem koju riječ o svojoj fitness rutini ali nekako su me od pisanja oduvkla druga dešavanja. No bez brige, to ne znači da sam se ulijenila po pitanju vježbanja – naprotiv, prijatno sam iznenađena time što sam tokom cijelog ljeta vrijedno vježbala i osjećala se prilično fit. Čak sam po dolasku jeseni izgubila koju kilu koju sam smatrala preostalim viškom. I to je bilo iznenađujuće pošto se uopšte nisam trudila da smršam i nisam se ustezala čak ni od malo “jače” hrane. Ukoliko me pratite na Snapchatu (simply_selma) znate da sam u masnim hamburgerima (omiljeni mi je New York burger u Pirpi), ponekoj kriški pizze i prozračnom kroasanu sa vanilijom iz Farina pekare uživala možda i prečesto. Nisam fitness ekspert i samo sam se površinski dotakla pojma “reverse dieting” tj. obrnute dijete ali izgleda da sam je tim opuštenim pristupom hrani spontano izvela.
  • Teorija je da ako duže vrijeme jedete relativno čistu i ujednačenu hranu poput jaja, piletine, brokule, riže, krompira, salate i sl. – tijelo će se prilagoditi i navići na nju, automatski usporavajući metabolizam jer upada u rutinu. Unosom sve te “jače” hrane sam šokirala tijelo i doslovno ubrzala metabolizam. Ljudsko tijelo je tako komplikovana mašina i mislim da nikada neću uspjeti u potpunosti da razumijem sve te neobične načine na koje funkcioniše. Iako iznenađena, neću se žaliti što se smanjio broj rolnica na stomaku koji više nije ni napuhan kao prije a noge više nisu mekane poput želea. Živio reverse dieting!
  • Ono u čemu sam malo zakazala je joga koju baš rijetko praktikujem. Voljela bih da joj se ponovo vratim upravo zbog unutarnjeg balansa koji mi je pružala. Također sam skoro u potpunosti napravila pauzu od kardia i sav fokus proteklih mjeseci je bio na vježbama sa tegovima. Sada se ponovo osjećam spremna da polako uvodim malo intenzivniji kardio u treninge, pored onih 10 minuta na biciklu kojim se zagrijem pred vježbe sa tegovima. I kada smo već kod njih, posljednjih 6 mjeseci sam bila baš redovna i vrijedno sam vježbala, pogotovo se fokusirajući na gornji dio tijela. Morala sam mnogo da se potrudim kako bih nadoknadila zaostatke i izbalansiram gornji dio tijela (ranije gotovo nerazvijen) sa inače snažnijim donjim dijelom. Uloženi trud se počeo isplaćivati i ruke su lijepo oblikovane, imaju tonus, na leđima imam mišiće za koje nisam znala da uopšte postoje i dosta sam snažnija – za početak, više mi niko ne treba nositi kese iz supermarketa.
  • S obzirom na pozitivan razvoj situacije, sebi sam postavila novi cilj a to je da se potrudim na dobijanju mišićne mase i povećanju snage. Lakše je reći nego učiniti naravno, ali recimo da ka tome stremim. Namjeravam pisati o tome kako mislim postići što sam zamislila, blog obogatiti sa još par dobrih recepata i možda napraviti “prije i kasnije” poređenje. To bi bilo dobro, ukoliko bi uspjela da se organizujem. Ne držite me za riječ ali čini mi se da i na blogu predstoji potpuno drugačiji pristup fitnessu.

      Pažnja mi je jedno vrijeme potpuno odvučena na drugu stranu ali planiram ponovo posvetiti se vježbanju i prehrani kao ranije.

    Awesome – I started reverse dieting in May and I was surprised how I didn't get as much fat as I expected! 😀 The best upside, I got even stronger (before I didn't eat carbs besides fruit because I can't live without it) and I'm never cutting carbs again – I just love being stronger and I don't get if my BF % goes higher.

    We've been working on the same things – upper body strength. So happy and proud of us – we can finally carry our own bags! 🙂

      I really love how we both started our fitness "journey" at approx the same time and now we do reverse-dieting at also the same time – unintentionally?
      Spooky but cool! 😀

      Yup, carbs are not something I would ever kick out of my diet and instead, I just play with the levels of carb intake. Nothing wrong with some love handles, right? 😀

      Awwww, I am also so very happy and proud of us both! I love that we have an unspoken fitness pact and refuse to let anyone else to carry our bags, haha!
