Palm Oil In Food #GoodOrBadPalmOil

* This blog post is sponsored by the Roundtable on Sustainable Plam Oil (RSPO). Although this post is sponsored, all opinions are my own.

I'm a firm believer and a passionate supporter of healthy choices because, after all, it all comes down to health – it's our most prized possession which we all take for granted. I've found that adjusting my diet is what had most impact on my overall health and on how I felt about myself. What is in your food? #GoodOrBadPalmOil campaign sounds odd but it hits home more than you'd think. I've gone through pages and pages of material but I'll try to break it down in in layman's terms. Although you see coconut oil is on a steady rise – it is far from being most used. I, for one, thought sunflower oil was most used and had no idea that palm oil is in fact the most produced and traded vegetable oil (it makes 65% of all vegetable oils traded internationally). And it is generally a common ingredient in many everyday items such as margarines, biscuits, breads, cereals, noodles, shampoos, lipsticks, candles, detergents, chocolates and ice creams to name a few. In fact, as much as half of all supermarket items contain palm oil. There's a really big chance you have several products in your home containing palm oil right now.

To give you some feedback, palm oil is an edible and highest yielding yet least expensive vegetable oil in the world, derived from the fruit of palm tree. It is commercially grown in several tropical countries but mainly in Indonesia and Malaysia, which account for 85% of global palm oil production. If you think that all palm oil used in your food and products is the same – you'll be surprised to know that there's a distinct difference between good palm oil and bad palm oil. And here is where the RSPO and the #GoodOrBadPalmOil campaign comes in. The key word here is “sustainable” palm oil. By being aware and choosing as a consumer to use sustainable palm oil basically means that you're willingly refusing to take part in negative effects of unsustainable palm oil; large-scale forest conversion, loss of critical habitat for endangered species (rhinos, elephants and tigers), soil erosion, soil and water pollution, eviction of forest-dwelling people and social conflict in communities for those 4.5 million people earning a living from sustainable palm oil production.

  • Cvrsto vjerujem i licno pokusavam prosiriti rijec o vaznosti donosenja pametnih i zdravih odluka.
I upravo ovdje RSPO organizacija i #GoodOrBadPalmOil kapmanja ulaze u pricu.

As you can see, this campaign is basically here to tell you that, as a consumer, you have the ability and the power to choose good choices. If you're someone who cares about what is in your food, you want to make responsible purchases and you're sympathetic to similar issues but maybe didn't have access to information or simply had no idea how to contribute – it's easier than you'd think and you're probably already involved. Brands such as Nestle, Lindt, Danone, Barilla, Coca-Cola, Haribo and Ferrero (that includes Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, Mon Cheri, Tic Tac, Kinder Bueno and Raffaello treats!), amongst many others, all are RSPO-approved. Neither is what I'd personally call a healthy brand of food or treats but, hand on heart – how many of us have eaten a bowl of Barilla pasta? I usually go for chickpea pasta but when I want a treat, I always eat Barilla pasta. And be honest – who hasn't indulged in Lindt chocolate, Nestle cocoa drinks, occasional Coke Zero *raiseshand*, a slice of bread slapped with Nutella – the list goes on! At least now I know that there is something good and positive about my indulgent snacks – that is a justification, if there ever was one, ha!

The conversation about good and bad palm oil is already happening and it would be great to have as many people as possible involved, sharing their views. One thing you can do is spread the word. Mention this to your sister, friend, colleague, neighbour or join the debate on social media, using the hashtag #GoodBadPalmOil. If you do decide to utilize social media, feel free to tag me as well. I am personally fond of the Jessica Dance artwork – the lady who knitted all the food captured on photos and seen in RSPO videos. I think it's an original way of bringing such an important topic closer to viewers. And who would've known that high-profile clients (such as Vogue, Google, Mulberry, Vanity Fair, Topshop, Whistles, Selfridges, Marie Claire, GAP etc.) are into knitted props? It really is an art – fun art!
