Old-School Face Wash Gel: Go or No-Go?

I’m not quite sure if this will be a review or a forum of some sort – I do really want to hear your opinion on this one, though. Foamy face wash gels – what do you think of them? Are they still a thing? Do you still use them in your skincare routine? I must admit that I have almost completely abandoned my La Roche-Posay Effaclar Foaming wash gel during this past winter and have replaced it with the Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Balm. Do know that my skin is the combination type, prone to dehydration but during the winter it really can become chronically parched. In addition, blemishes do arise from time to time and I really don’t benefit from anything too heavy or too stripping. Fast forward, the winter days are long gone, even spring is at its last phase and summer is approaching quickly. I’ve completely used-up my Oskia wonder and have turned to face cleansing oils (more specifically, the L’Occitane Shea Butter one). However, I think that excessive sweating during physical activity yields more blemishes than usual and I must wash my skin as soon as I come home – otherwise my skin gets horribly clogged. In that aspect, I’m happy that I’ve kept my old LRP Effaclar face wash but I’ve found something of a similar effect for half the price. Manhattan Clearface Wash Gel (150ml costs approc 4,5€) is an old-school type of face wash and I have a completely different use for it than you’d imagine.

The packaging is a soft squeezy tube of a clean, almost sterile visual – it figures as this face wash is marketed as something geared towards resolving blemishes. I’ve gone through a myriad of acne and blemish problems during my teenage years and I’m not the proponent of young teens or adults using aggressive and stripping products to treat the oiliness and or impurities of the skin. That being said, I wouldn’t say that this particular face wash aids in blemish treatment and I wouldn’t use it on my eyes to remove make-up. It’s not foamy as its clear, medium thick formulation doesn’t foam up – it just turns into a jelly-like consistency when in contact with water. It’s of a fruity scent and I love to use it on my face after hitting the gym or running. That being said, it’s not the most stripping kind of face wash but it does leave the face a little tight after use. I’m assuming that prolonged use on a skin which is prone to dehydration would eventually lead to stripped skin. Don’t even think of using it if your skin is dry – you need something completely different. I must say that I’m on a fence here – these face gels seem to be a bit archaic in the ol’ beauty world and they’re replaced by much more elaborate products such as cleansing balms, oils etc. Sure they often cost more (well, not really – anyone can get almond oil for cheap!) but they’re kinder to skin whilst doing their job. If you’re on a budget and have a skin that isn’t reactive, dry, sensitive or dehydrated – or maybe you just need something refreshing after physical activity, this may be a good one to check out! I think that the Manhattan Clearface range got redesigned and this isn’t the old version of the ‘all-in-1’ face wash with blue beads, so keep that in mind. Are you still on the foamy gel team or have you moved on?
