Top Five: Movies I’ve Watched Recently

It’s been a while since I’ve posted fresh content as a part of the Top Five series at the blog. However, this elapsed time has allowed me to gather lots and lots of info I thought you guys might find interesting and, perhaps, useful (during those moments when you just don’t know what to do with yourself out of boredom). Well, no fear as I’ve compiled best movies I’ve watched so far and I think anyone and everyone who has me as their Facebook buddy might testify that I’ve watched a lot of movies recently. We’re talking about dozens of movies during the past 2-3 months. I think you’ll sympathise when I tell you that narrowing all those movies at only top five was an unbearable (and impossible) task. As a part of the Top Five: Movies I’ve Watched Recently post, I have my top six movies prepared for ya and a few on the side note. Let’s kick things off with the one I have freshest memories of – Edge Of Tomorrow (2014.). You may not know this but I was a fierce Sci-Fi fan a few years back. Than the genre was tainted by lousy actors, predictable and poorly executed plots and let me not forget horrific absence of compelling effects. Let me rephrase that – Hollywood killed the science fiction as well as horror genres. Nevertheless, Tom Cruise truly shines in this one truly giving its perhaps best Sci-Fi performance (besides Oblivion). Emily Blunt also impressed me and I must say that I though her estethic surgeon is brilliant. Who prefers Sci-Fi in general might be interested in Lucy (2014.) which was one of my most coveted movies lately but I kinda fell a bit flat. It does keep the viewer entertained throughout but I felt like something was missing. A brilliant theme that could perhaps be worked a bit better. If you’re a fan of Sci-Fi and ScarJo (I just had to put that nickname there), and you’re not shying away from artistic, indie niche – Under The Skin (2013.) might be worth watching. Just remember, it’s very interesting but not for everyone. Another Sci-Fi that is a bit different than the stereotypical kind is Transcendence (2014.) with Johnny Depp. This one does make you think about lots of things, definitely worth a watch. If you’re into European movies, I have a brilliant recommendation – Headhunters (2011.). This is a fabulous, smart, witty, exceptional movie from Norway in which everything is well thought. Every last detail and the story is so good. This movie is based upon “Headhunters” novel by Jo Nesbø and is one of the best thrillers I’ve ever watched. Another gem from Norway is Varg Veum – Fallen Angels (2008.). Not as unpredictable as Headhunters but is a great mystery based on a best-selling Norwegian crime novel by Gunnar Staalesen.

Third favorite movie I can recommend is The Fault In Our Stars (2014.). Now ladies, my honest advice is that you watch this movie in the privacy of your home. Watch it alone – no girlfriends as that might be too much emotion for one room to bare and most certainly – don’t watch it with your significant half (especially if it’s male). You will need tons of tissues or toilet paper and let the cathartic experience begin! I’m dead serious about this one – I left my heart and soul, no – I’ve cried my eyes, heart and soul while I was watching this movie and I don’t regret a single tear. You will fall in love with Hazel and Gus and probably feel very happy and grateful for what you have in your life after you’re done with the movie. If you’ve had your dose of lovey-dovey things and are in the mood for some meaningful action, interesting plot, believe in destiny and don’t mind seeing Shia LaBeouf in some tear inducing, laugh bursting and a tad naive scenes – go for The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (2013.). This movie made me fall in love with Bucharest. Seriously. Next two movies are not the kind for sensitive souls that feel shy at the mention of filthy words or absurd nudity scenes. Dom Hemingway (2013.) is a raw movie, no gentle talk or handling can be seen here (interpret this as you wish). Notorious, beyond repair safe-cracker Dom goes through a roller coaster of emotions in a short period of time after doing a long sentence in jail. You sometimes loathe the man, sometimes you cry for him but you’re mostly shocked at what crazy stuff he’s doing throughout the movie. Jude Law is beyond amazing in this role (truth be told, as always) and I seriously recommend watching this arrogant role of his flourish by the end of 90th minute. If you’re into a softer but none less disappointing Jude Law performance, than I can recommend Side Effects (2013.). Brilliant, smart movie. I adore James McAvoy in Filth (2013.) – as weird as that sounds. This is beyond every thought of what a corrupt cop may be you had in your head. This is the craziest movie lots of us watched in a long time and indeed it left me speechless. You just don’t have enough time to react to every shocking thing you see or hear. I mean, this raw masterpiece comes from the creator of Trainspotting (1996.) so you just know that it will be fantastic! If you’re easily offended, skip it but everyone else will think of the movie days after you’ve watched it.

The Fault In Our Stars (2014.). The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (2013.).
