Breast Cancer Awareness Month Manicure | October 2013.


Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast divide and grow without
their normal control. Tumors in the breast tend to grow slowly. By the
time a lump is large enough to feel, it may have been growing for as
long as 10 years. Some tumors, however, are aggressive and grow much
faster. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. It is
estimated that more than 1.6 million new cases of breast cancer occurred
among women worldwide in 2010 (most recent data available). Rates of breast cancer around the world vary a great deal. In
general, developed countries (such as the U.S., England and Australia)
have higher rates than developing countries (such as Cambodia, Nepal and
Rwanda). And, women who live in developed countries tend to have a higher lifetime risk of breast cancer than women who live in developing countries. Although we don’t know all the reasons for these differences,
lifestyle and reproductive factors likely play a large role. Low
screening rates and incomplete reporting can make rates of breast cancer
in developing countries look lower than they truly are and may also
explain some of the difference.

Rak dojke nastaje kada se celije unutar grudi dijele i rastu izvan kontrole. Tumori u grudima obicno rastu jako sporo. Do trenutka kada je kvrzica dovoljno velika kako bi je mogli opipati, moguce je da je rasla jako dugo vremena – nekada i do 10 godina. Sa druge strane, postoje tumori koji su agresivni i rastu mnogo brze. Rak dojke je najrasireniji tip raka medju zenama. Procjenjuje se da se vise od 1.6 miliona novih slucajeva raka dojke pojavilo sirom svijeta u 2010. godini (prema posljednjim podacima). Stopa pojavljivanja raka dojke znacajno varira u svijetu. Uopsteno gledajuci, razvijene zemlje (poput SAD-a, Engleske i Australije) imaju vise stope oboljelih od zemalja u razvoju (Kambodza, Nepal, Ruanda). Za zene koje zive u razvijenim zemljama postoji veca sansa da obole od raka dojke tokom zivota nego sto postoji za zene koje zive u zemljama u razvoju. Iako svi razlozi zbog kojih dolazi do navedenih razlika medju zemljama nisu potpuno poznati, stil zivota i reproduktivni faktori sigurno igraju veliku ulogu. Ono sto takodjer utice na to da djeluje kako u zemljama u razvoju imamo manje oboljelih od raka moze biti i zbog nepotpunih i nepreciznih podataka. Sumnja se da je slabo sprovodjenje pracenja i zavodjenja itekako utjecalo na ove rezultate.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is an annual international health
campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to
increase awareness and to raise funds for research into its cause,
prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. A variety of events around
the world are organized in October including walks and runs, pink
illumination of landmark buildings. One of the most known is the Race
for the Cure (originating from the US). In 1993 Evelyn Lauder of the
Estée Lauder Companies founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and
established the pink ribbon as its symbol, though this was not the
first time the ribbon was used to symbolize breast cancer. In the fall
of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation had handed out pink ribbons to
participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors. Pink ribbon was adopted as the official symbol of National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month the next year, in 1992. The pink ribbon was derived
from the popular red ribbon for AIDS awareness. The pink ribbon
represents fear of breast cancer, hope for the future and the
charitable goodness of people and businesses who publicly support the
breast cancer movement. Each October, hundreds, if not thousands, of
products are emblazoned with pink ribbons, colored pink, sold with a
promise of a portion of the total cost being donated to support breast
cancer awareness or research. Because the pink ribbon is not licensed by
any corporation, it is more open to being abused by businesses that
donate little or none of their revenue to breast cancer research.

Mjesec borbe protiv raka dojke (Breast Cancer Awareness Month/BCAM) je godisnja internacionalna kampanja koju organizuju humanitarna udruzenja u borbi protiv raka dojke svakog oktobra, kako bi povecali svijest i prikupili sredstva koja se preusmjeravaju u fondove za istrazivanje, prevenciju, dijagnozu, tretman i lijecenje. Niz razlicitih desavanja se tokom mjeseca oktobra organizuje sirom svijeta ukljucujuci setnje, utrke ili osvjetljavanje bitnih lokacija u ruzicastu boju. Jedno od svakako najpoznatijih takvih desavanja je svakako Utrka za lijek (Race for the Cure), koja potice iz SAD-a. Godine 1993. Evelyn Lauder (Estée Lauder Companies), osnovala je Fondaciju za istrazivanje raka dojke (The Breast Cancer Research Foundation). Evelyn je ustvari ta koja je dodijelila ruzicastu vrpcu kao simbol te fondacije ali i uopsteno borbe protiv raka dojke. Ovo doduse nije bio prvi put da se ruzicasta traka kao simbol povezuje sa borbom protiv raka dojke. U jesen 1991. Fondacija Susan G. Komen je dijelila ruzicaste vrpce ucesnicima u gradskoj utrci New Yorka za prezivjele od raka dojke. Ruzicasta vrpca je iduce godine usvojena kao zvanicni simbol Nacionalnog mjeseca za borbu protiv raka dojke, kako ga nazivaju amerikanci. Ruzicasta vrpca je potekla od crvene vrpce koja se koristi kao simbol u borbi protiv AIDS-a. Ruzicasta vrpca simbolizuje strah od raka dojke, nadu za buducnost te humanitarnu pomoc i podrsku kako pojedinaca tako i kompanija koje javno iskazuju podrsku ovom pokretu. Svakog oktobra stotine (ako ne i hiljade) proizvoda se ukrasava ruzicastim vrpcama ili se farbaju u ruzicastu boju, uz obecanje da ce odredjeni postotak prodaje istih biti doniran istrazivanju protiv raka dojke. Posto ova vrpca kao simbol nije zavedena kao necije vlasnistvo, nitko je nije prisvojio – postoji veca opasnost od njene zloupotrebe. Najcesece je rijec o kompanijama koje doniraju neznatnu sumu ili uopste ne odvajaju sredstva od prodaje proizvoda.

 

While companies such as Estée Lauder have distributed over 70 million
pink ribbons, and donated over $25 million to breast cancer research,
other companies have been discovered using the pink ribbon
inappropriately either by not donating their profits, or by using the
pink ribbon on products that include ingredients which cause cancer. The
misuse of marketing campaigns by businesses using the pink ribbon on
their products have been described as pinkwashing. I urge you to get
involved in supporting the fight against breast cancer in the form you
find to be most appropriate. And if you do decide to purchase a product
with a pink ribbon on it – do make sure that you know how many proceeds
will actually be donated from the sales to the awareness funds. Always
go for those who donate most of the money you pay for their products.
Also look into with which organizations these brands collaborate on
this. Everything should be transparent. And no, Diet Coke with pink
ribbon on is a no-no in my books (in case someone was wondering).

Dok su kompanije poput Estée Lauder podijelile preko 70 miliona ruzicastih vrpca te donirale preko 25 miliona dolara istrazivanju usmjerenom protiv raka dojke – za neke druge se otkrilo kako se koriste ruzicastom vrpcom na neprimjeren nacin tako sto ne doniraju dio profita ili tako sto ruzicastom vrpcom ukrasavaju proizvode koji su povezani sa nastankom raka. Zloupotreba marketinskih kampanja koja ukljucuje ruzicastu vrpcu kao simbol se naziva “pinkwashing“. Svakako apelujem da se ukljucite u borbu protiv raka dojke na nacin koji vama odgovara i koji smatrate sebi bliskim. I ako se odlucite na kupovinu nekog proizvoda (beauty ili drugog), potrudite se da saznate kojoj organizaciji ce dobit od prodaje biti donirana. Mislim da je najbolje za kupovinu birati one proizvode gdje ce vecina cijene koju platite za njih biti donirana konkretno u svrhu borbe protiv ove bolesti. Takodjer nije lose raspitati se o organizacijama ili brendovima koji se time bave. Sve bi trebalo biti transparentno. I ne, Coca-Cola meni licno ne spada u vrstu proizvoda koje bih na taj nacin podrzala (ako je nekoga mozda ova informacija zanimala).

haven't purchased any pink ribbon embellished products yet (I do plan to) but I have
created a pink ribbon manicure. I've decided to use Revelique High Shine
nail polishes since they don't contain any of the nasties. That makes
them a natural choice since they do care about the health of their
buyers by choosing right and unobtrusive ingredients. I hope you will
like my little attempt of this pink ribbon manicure. If you try to recreate
one as well, do share a photo on my Facebook page. In order to create this simple manicure I've used Revelique High Shine
nail polishes
in Marshmallow (20)*, Pirouette (140) and Berry Mix (130)*. To take care of my hands I've used my most-loved Burt's Bees Almond Beeswax hand cream, Seacret cuticle oil and Ebelin nail polish remover (to get rid of any mistakes). My tools for drawing the pink ribbon symbol on my ring finger were an orange stick for nails and plain toothpicks. I wasn't even going for the stamping tool because I feel like there's no need to. I'm not fussy and a hand-drawn details always appeal to me more than stamps. Base coat on the ring finger was the Revelique nail polish in Pirouette (140) and on other nails the base was teh Marshmallow (20) hue. Pink ribbon was drawn with Berry Mix (130), just to make things a bit more interesting.


Jos uvijek nisam kupila neki od ovih proizvoda (sto namjeravam uciniti) ali sam kreirala manikuru koja je inspirirana ruzicastom vrpcom. Odlucila sam koristiti Revelique High Shine lakove za nokte iz razloga sto u sebi ne sadrze stetne sastojke. Nadam se da ce vam se dopasti moj skromni pokusaj. Ako se odlucite da pruzite podrsku inicijativi i da po uzoru na ovu manikuru napravite nesto slicno, podijelite sa mnom sliku svoje manikure inspirisane ruzicastom vrpcom na Facebook stranici. Ja sam koristila Revelique High Shine lakove za nokte u nijansama  Marshmallow (20)*, Pirouette (140) i Berry Mix (130)*. Za njegu ruku sam koristila voljenu kremu za ruke Burt's Bees Almond Beeswax, Seacret ulje za zanoktice i Ebelin skidac laka za nokte (za popravljanje greskica). Kao “alat” su mi posluzili stapic narandze i obicne cackalice te sam njima rucno iscrtala simbol ruzicaste vrpce na domalom noktu. Nisam se zeljela posluziti uzorcima niti pecatima posto nisam previse zahtjevna po pitanju detalja na notima. Vise mi se dopada kada je simbol rucno nacrtan. Baza na domalom noktu je bio Revelique lak Pirouette (140) a na ostalim noktima je to bio Marshmallow (20). Ruzicasta vrpca je nacrtana sa nijansom Berry Mix (130), kako bih ipak malo ucinila nesto drugacije od ocekivane ruzicaste.

      Bas mi je drago jer sam ih nalakirala jutro nakon odradjene nocne smjene na poslu pa sam isla na rizik i nisam znala kako ce sve ispasti :))
      Krasno mi je sto sam na ovaj nacin uspjela skrenuti paznju na nesto sto smatram bitnim.

    Ono kad se svi dogovore da rade matching manicures na ovu temu u nedjelju i nadje se uljez kao i u svemu dosad. Neki ljudi jednostavno ne zele da nudu slozni.
