Falling In Love with Vienna

5/05/2017

Travelling is one of the things I want to do more in my life - I don't get to travel much, mostly due to my "real job" but I'm quite determined to change this. My husband and myself have been planning a visit to Vienna - we've looked up everything from what season is the best to visit Vienna (we think it's in spring and winter), accommodation and all of the sights we wanted to see. On our Vienna bucket list we had Museum of Technology, Natural History Museum, Museumsquartier, Sigmund Freud Museum, house of Mozart, Haydnhaus - and many more. That's why I've been super surprised when drogerie markt Bosnia and Herzegovina offered to take me to Vienna to their #dmbloggerevent (a whole post about it is coming after this one!). Even now thinking about it, it was such a wonderful experience albeit a short one.

This trip lasted three days in total - majority of the first day was spent getting to Vienna from Sarajevo. Car ride isn't unpleasant but is lengthy so I'd either mentally prepare for another in my personal agenda - or I'd splash on a airplane ticket. From Bosnia, Croatia to Slovenia and Austria - before entering Vienna, we have made a stop at the Shopping City Süd in Vösendorf (SCS). Being one of the biggest shopping centers in Europe, you can expect to find almost anything you imagine. I could spend an entire day browsing all the shops but I've had only two hours on my hands so I tried to be quick. Douglas in SCC has a lot of beauty brands and I hoped to purchase Zoeva eyeshadow palettes but I was told they're an online exclusive only. I was impressed when I saw the Thierry Mugler Source in person. Esprit is a clothing brand I love so I recommend checking out their store. Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks, Ikea, MAC, Urban Decay, Kiko, Zara Home, Primark - with all those shops at your reach it's hard not to be entertained.

I was staying at Rainers Hotel Vienna - a simple, cozy and clean hotel with exceptionally friendly staff. It's not a modern hotel but I felt welcome there, I had everything I could wish for in my room and the bed was amazing. Free and fast wi-fi, air con, hair dryer, gorgeous bath tub, enough power sockets for your laptop, phone, camera battery charger etc., complimentary teas, coffee - I even asked for an ironing board (I hate wrinkly clothes) and the receptionist delivered it to my room. Breakfast options are fab and it's possible to order a cab from the hotel.

I had just a few hours to explore the city prior the #dmbloggerevent and I've managed to see the Albertina Museum (stairs and front is great for photos overlooking the city), majestic Vienna State Opera, despite many streets being renovated I've managed to see the St. Stephen's Cathedral and to walk the Grabenstrasse, Mariahilfer strasse, Karlsplatz, Stephansplatz and a few smaller ones branching out. Tons and tons of shops (H&M, Primark, L'Occitane etc.), Nordsee is delicious, Zara Home is big homebody wonderland and Douglas (again) - an absolute joy! I've tried Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir (and fell in love!) and Bobbi Brown is simply calling my name. I must own some BB in my collection! Try to visit bigger Douglas stores as the smaller ones don't have a good selection of brands.

Palmenhaus Schönbrunn is a large greenhouse with around 4,500 plant species. The Cafe - Brasserie - Bar included looks lovely and has a great decor - apart from a detail I couldn't unsee. Tables with paper table pads leave a not-so-positive impression and they don't go well with the herbal/botanical decor. Details like that can be bothering to weirdos like me. Their hot chocolate is pretty good, though. Next time I would definitely see the Schmetterlinghaus (Butterfly house).

Additional info: transportation in Vienna is abundant - from trams, u-bahn, trolleys, horse carriage, regular taxi and Uber, you can definitely find something that will suit your preference and budget. If, however, you're planning to visit a lot of the city's attractions, it will probably be worth investing in a Vienna Card. They cost €13.90 for 24 hours, €21.90 for 48 hours or €24.90 for 72 hours and give you unlimited travel by public transport as well as discounts on 210 museums, sights, shops and restaurants. You can buy the cards at the Tourist Information Centre in Albertinaplatz, at the airport or online.

Don't over-pack but bring enough clothes you can layer - if it's windy or there is rain, you will feel very cold. Wear comfy shoes (trust me on this one). Street food is cheap. People are very relaxed, quite friendly so if you get lost, feel free to ask for directions. All in all, a very pleasant city which I'll visit again as this quick trip was just a lil' dip of toes in the Viennese experience. Next time I'll come fully prepared!

Iz BiH preko Hrvatske i Slovenije do Austrije - prije ulaska u sam Beč napravili smo pauzu u Shopping City Süd centru u Vösendorfu (SCS).
Moram svoju kozmetičku kolekciju dopuniti BB komadima! Savjetovala bih da posjetite veće Douglase jer manji nemaju posebno dobar izbor.

    1. Thank you! Oh, I completely understand since my own "real job" doesn't allow me to travel as I'd like either. This was a perk while I was on vacation and it was wonderful ♥
