Tips for Dealing with Winter

December 21st marked the winter solstice. Late dawn. Early sunset. Short day. Long night. I'm the first person to admit that the darkness around this time of year makes it hard for us to function. Have you noticed that we seem to wake up in the dark, go to work in the dark and go home in the dark? Despite nature telling us it's time to hibernate, I have a few tricks up my sleeve for getting through these dark days and nights.

Enjoy the festive season. Although dark and gloomy, December is also the most festive month of all. There is something about the holiday atmosphere that lifts up spirits and the holiday decorations are so easy on the eye. Scatter fairy lights around, make that Christmas tree shiny and bright and bring on the holiday food. There are tons of great Christmas movies to watch (Home Alone being a personal fave) and Christmassy songs are so uplifting. I love listening to them on the radio.

Cozy up! I'm aware that with the arrival of winter, I spend the majority of free time at home. There are tons of ways to create a cozy space - I found some great advice HERE and HERE. Having an accent peach wall brought such warmth and dimension to our bedroom. White walls can look pretty but an accent wall makes everything look 10x better. We've hanged some of my husband's art on it and added a few framed prints too. You cannot go wrong with candles, blankets and throws - the more, the merrier I always say. Investing into nice bedding is essential and I'm a big fan of dark bedding as I get better sleep bundled in it.

Adjust routines. Doesn't it seem counter-intuitive to keep the same routine whilst the daylight hours change yet we stay on the same schedule? Inevitably we're having less daylight, less productive hours as it gets dark by 5 pm. So why not go to bed an hour earlier than usual? That way you can get up an hour earlier and make the most of the daylight in the mornings.

Treat yourself. If everything fails, cheer yourself up with whatever you fancy. I'm not above treating myself and I do feel better when I have my favorite tea or chocolate after a long day. Cancel all your plans and cozy up with your favorite movie, a bowl of popcorn and great company. Have an indulging pamper session, treat your senses to the most luxurious bath you have. An early night in your softest pajamas and fuzzy socks is comforting and enough reason to enjoy these dark, gloomy winter nights.

  • Dvadeset i prvi decembar je označio zimski solsticij odnosno "najkraći dan u godini". Kasno svitanje. Rani suton. Kratak dan. Duga noć. Prva ću priznati da mi tama, karaketristična za ovo doba godine, otežava normalno funkcionisanje na svakodnevnoj bazi. Da li ste primjetili kako se budimo u mraku, odlazimo na posao u mraku i vraćamo se kući u mraku? Uprkos tome što nas priroda prisiljava na hibernaciju, imam par trikova uz pomoć kojih lakše podnosim ove tamne dane i noći.
  • Uživajte u praznicima. Iako mračan i oblačan, decembar je ipak i najveseliji praznik. Ima nešto u atmosferi, u odnosu sa ljudima što podiže raspoloženje. Također su i praznične dekoracije ugodne oku. Rasporedite sitna sijalice po uglovima prostorija, okitite božićno drvce najljepšim ukrasima a stomačić napunite prazničnim delicijama. Na svakom kanalu možete pronaći dobre Božićne filmove (Sam u kući je moj favorit) a praznične pjesme su također tako lijepe. Ja ih volim slušati na radiju.
  • Ušuškajte se! Svjesna sam da, dolaskom zime, većinu slobodnog vremena provodim kod kuće. Na dohvat ruke nam je mnogo načina kako učiniti dom još prijatnijim, ljepšim te unijeti toplinu i osjećaj intime. Pronašla sam super savjete OVDJE i OVDJE pa sam ih primjenila u svom domu. Jedna od najboljih ideja je bila ofarbati jedan zid u boju breskve, što je prostoriju učinilo tako "toplom". Bijeli zidovi mogu izgledati lijepo ali jedan karakteran zid transformiše sobu. Na njega smo okačili umjetničke radove mog supruga i dodali par printova koje smo uramili. Nećete pogriješiti ako nabavite deke, prekrivače i mirisne svijeće kojih što više - to bolje. Uložiti u kvalitetnu posteljinu je odlična ideja. Ja nabolje spavam u tamnoj posteljini, koja mi je ujedno i najljepša.
  • Prilagodite rutinu. Zar ne djeluje kontraintuitivno pridržavati se iste rutine dok dani kraćaju a noći postaju duže? Neizbježno je dnevnog svjetla sve manje a time i manje produktivnih sati, te noć pada do pet sati popodne. Zašto onda ne pokušati zaspati barem jedan sat ranije? Na taj način se možemo ustati sat ranije i bolje iskoristiti ono dnevnog svjetla koje sada imamo na raspolaganju.
  • Ugodite sebi. Ako ništa ne urodi plodom, nije grijeh počastiti se nečim što želimo. Nije mi ispod časti uživati u omiljenom čaju ili čokoladi nakon dugog, napornog dana. Otkažite sve planove i ostanite kući uz dobar film, društvo i kokice. Pripremite sebi noć ugađanja i najluksuzniju kupku. Kada se ušuškate u najmekšu pidžamu i čupave čarape, sigurno ćete se osjećati bolje, opuštenije i možda čak pronaći malo užitka u ovim tamnim danima i noćima.
