Palm Oil In Cosmetics #GoodOrBadPalmOil

5/28/2016

* This blog post is sponsored by the Roundtable on Sustainable Plam Oil (RSPO). Although this post is sponsored, all opinions are my own.

There was a mention of the #GoodOrBadPalmOil campaign earlier at the blog (see here) and the focus was on sustainable palm oil in food. Your pizza, cookies, margarin, chocolate, noodles, ice cream and even bread contain palm oil - it would be wise to keep in check where that palm oil came from and in which conditions it was produced. You might not cook with it, but you almost certainly eat or use palm oil. It is the most produced and most used vegetable oil on the planet - you have it in your lipsticks, soaps, shampoos, candles and detergent. By 2020, the use of palm oil is expected to double, as the world's population increases and as people – especially in countries like China and India – become more affluent and consume more manufactured goods containing palm oil.

Thanks to increased awareness throughout the global media, more and more people are becoming aware that they are very likely to be contributing to the devastating situation caused by the heavily unregulated palm oil industry without even knowing it, as palm oil is very rarely actually labelled as such in product ingredients lists. We now know that when we see "vegetable fat" or "vegetable oil" listed on product packaging that it could very well be masking the fact that the product contains palm oil. It very likely does considering that the latest studies suggest that nearly half of all products on our supermarket shelves do in fact contain palm oil.

Clearing land for oil palm plantations has led to widespread deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia as well as other regions. Not only does this lead to extinction of animal species and forcing indigenous people off their land - globally, the destruction of tropical forests is a major contributor to climate change, as felled and burned trees and vegetation release methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Moreover, because fire is often used as a cheap and quick means to clear land for oil palm plantations, the resulting air pollution can block out the sun and threaten human health both near and far. In recent years, almost a fifth of oil palm expansion in Indonesia and Malaysia has taken place on peat swamps. When these peat swamps are cleared and drained they release enormous amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Kako?

What can we do as consumers? Well, we can start educating ourselves on the matter and spreading the word. It may come as another horrifying surprise that even the savviest of shoppers are still contributing to this environmentally devastating industry by purchasing cosmetic products that contain palm oil or it's derivatives without even knowing it can be labelled under a multitude of different names. Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Elaies Guineensis (Palm) Kernel Oil, Hydrogenated Palm Oil and Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil are oils obtained from the palm tree, Elaeis guineensis. In cosmetics and personal care products, these Palm Oil ingredients are used in the formulation of skin care products, makeup and suntan products. Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products? Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Elaies Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Hydrogenated Palm Oil and Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil are primarily used as skin conditioning agents - occlusive. The Hydrogenated Palm Oil ingredients may also be used as viscosity increasing agents.

There is a stance that people should banish palm oil altogether from their lives but I find that we don't have to give up products containing palm oil. If it can be produced in a responsible manner that respects the environment and the communities where it is commonly grown, it's something I personally find worth supporting. And that is what the RSPO's #GoodOrBadPalmOil campaign is all about. What we can do is purchase products that obviously contain sustainable palm oil from RSPO-approved brands (such as L'Occitane, Avon, Oriflame, L'Oreal, La Roche-Posay, Shiseido, L'Erbolario, Palmolive etc.) - some of which I personally already support, use and love. To make sure you're using products containing sustainable palm oil, just look for the RSPO stamp - as seen on the L'Occitane Pivoine soap below. Say 'YES" to good palm oi, it doesn't have to be bad!
