Ice Pancakes Phenomena

I have a sneaky feeling that this post will bring bouts of nostalgia to hearts of my most loyal and enduring readers. If you remember the time when this blog was named 'Meteo Beauty' and if you genuinely cheered for weather related posts than this is for you my friend! There aready is a plethora of reading material and eye candy for all those meteorology enthusiasts among you. And I will occasionally drop a post such as this one to mix things up every time I stumble upon interesting things I haven't mentioned here before and the Ice Pancakes Phenomena is certainly one of those  things.

Truth be told, the first header photo is something rather similar to ice pancake phenomena but somewhat different yet equally visually pleasing and intriguing. What you see are frozen methane bubbles trapped under a lake that can be ignited with a match (quite literally). These were captured in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. The frozen bubbles form when microbes consume dead organic matter on the bottom of the lake. In the summer the bubbles simply rise to the surface and pop, but in the winter they are frozen within the ice. The gas is fairly harmless, but these bubbles can cause an explosion if lit.

Unusual and bizzarely similar pancake shaped ice formations that are more typically seen in Arctic and Antarctic sea ice were found floating on a river in Scotland back in December. The dinner plate-sized ice 'pancakes' have formed on a quiet stretch of the River Dee in Aberdeenshire. Pancake ice s a phenomenon where discs of ice anywhere from 20-200cm wide are formed creating a unique spectacle. It is a relatively rare phenomenon that tends to occur in very cold oceans and lakes (most frequently seen in the Baltic Sea, around Antarctica and relatively frequently on the Great Lakes of the US and Canada).

In oceans, seas and lakes the discs are created when waves cause forming pieces of ice to knock against each other rounding their edges as they freeze and grow. Small rims are created on the edges as the knocking causes splashing water to freeze and join the rim. They are also believed to form when foam on a river begins to freeze and joins together and as they are sucked into an eddy (a swirling current of water) they form into circular shape as a result. As other bits of frozen foam and ice hit the forming disc they freeze to it and increase its size.

I think they look fascinating and am secretly hoping to spot them once myself. If you have been among the lucky few to spot these icy pancakes do share and don't forget the maple syrup! :)

Jedna od njih je svakako fenomen ledenih palacinki
  • Ono sto pak vidite na prvoj slici (iznad teksta) je nesto drugacija pojava no jednako estetski intrigantna i atraktivna. Pred vama su u biti zaledjeni baloncici metana, zarobljeni pod jezerom koje bi doslovno mogli zapaliti sibicom. Prizor je zabiljezen u Banff Nacionalnom parku u Alberti, Kanada. Zaledjeni baloncici se formiraju kada mikrobi konzumiraju nezivu organsku materiju na dnu jezera. Tokom ljeta se baloncici jednostavno podignu do povrsine jezera i rasprse se ali tokom zime ostaju zarobljeni unutar jezera. Sam gas je relativno bezopasan ali baloncici bi mogli prouzrokovati eksploziju ukoliko bi dosli u kontakt sa zapaljivom materijom.
  • Neobicne i bizarno slicne ledene palacinke su formacija koju cesce mozete zapaziti u Arktickom i Antarktickom moru a proslog decembra su vidjene kako plutaju na rijeci u Skotskoj. Palacinke velicine kuhinjskih tanjira  su se formirale na mirnom kraju rijeke Dee, mjesto Aberdeenshire. Fenomen ledenih palacinki su ledene formacije promjera 20-200cm koje skupa kreiraju jedinstven prizor. Ovo je relativno rijedak fenomen koji se javlja u veoma hladnim okeanima i jezerima (najcesce u Baltickom moru, oko Antarktika te relativno cesto na prostoru Velikih jezera na granici SAD-a i Kanade).
  • U okeanima, morima i jezerima dolazi do formiranja diskova kada se komadi leda sudaraju jedan sa drugim uslijed kretnji valova, time zaobljujuci ivice sto, tokom naizmjenicnog dnevnog procesa zaledjivanja i odledjivanja dovodi do rasta  njihovih dimenzija. Izdignute ivice diskova se stvaraju tako sto, uslijed sudaranja i pljuskanja leda i vode, voda se talozi i ledi po ivicama povecavajuci im debljinu. Jos jedan nacin nastanka ledenih palacinki jeste kada se pjena na povrsini rijeke pocinje lediti i stiskati u jedan nekoherenmtan sloj. Uslijed vrtlozne struje dolazi do nastanka kruznog oblika. Kako se okolni komadi zaledjene pjene i leda sudaraju, zaledjivanje i kretnja dovode do porasta njihovog obima.

  2. Nisam ranije vidjela ovako nesto! I zaista je fascinantno, i ne bih imala nista protiv vidjeti ovaj fenomen uzivo :D ali ne volim zimu i hladnocu, tako da...i kad bi mi se pruzila prilika da vidim, radije bih izabrala neko toplije mjesto :D

    1. Licno najvise volim da tokom godine osjetim sva cetiri godisnja doba - to je najprirodnije.
      A svako godisnje doba ima neku svoju car - ove palacinke bih bas voljela uzivo vidjeti, mislim da su bas poseban prizor! :D
